1. Hygiene: A Must Before you even step onto the mat, ensure that you are clean and well-groomed. Trim your nails, wash your body, and wear a clean Gi. Maintaining proper personal hygiene not only shows respect to your training partners but also prevents the spread of infections. Remember, Jiu Jitsu involves close physical contact, so keeping yourself clean is a sign of consideration for others. 2. Respect shaking hands with your instructor and partners before and after class is a tradition that symbolizes respect for the knowledge and the learning environment. 3. Safety First Jiu Jitsu is physically demanding and can be risky if not practiced safely. Always prioritize your partner's safety by applying submissions and techniques with control. If you feel that your partner is not tapping or appears to be in distress, release the pressure immediately. Accidents can happen, but being reckless on the mat is not only disrespectful but can lead to injuries that affect everyone's training experience. 4. Communicate Clearly Communication is key on the Jiu Jitsu mat. If you have an injury or a concern, make sure to inform your training partner and the instructor. Additionally, tap early and tap often. Tapping is a signal of submission and is vital to preventing injuries. Don't hesitate to tap if you find yourself caught in a submission that you cannot escape. 5. Leave Your Ego at the Door One of the most important principles of Jiu Jitsu is humility. It's crucial to leave your ego behind when you step onto the mat. Everyone is there to learn and improve, and there's no room for showing off or belittling others. Respect the skill levels of your training partners, and remember that even the most advanced practitioners were once beginners. 6. Practice Good Sportsmanship Winning and losing are both part of the Jiu Jitsu journey. Whether you're on the giving or receiving end of a submission, maintain good sportsmanship. Be gracious in victory and humble in defeat. Applaud your training partner's successes, and offer encouragement when needed. Building a supportive community enhances the learning experience for everyone. 7. Clean Up After Yourself After the training session, ensure that you pick up your belongings, tidy up the area, and put away any equipment you used. Leaving the mat clean shows respect for the training space and the efforts of those who maintain it. 8. NO BARE FEET OFF THE MAT.
